On Wednesday Mr Kau Kau came to room 9 to do soap carving.Firstly he told us story's about his Maori culture and how he gets paid for being Maori.By the time he told us all of his story's it was morning tea. After morning tea we did our soap carving. It was fun and weird how if it looked bad there was always a way to making it good like mine it was weird and Mr Kau Kau fixed it.It was lunch time. After lunch we made our carvings better and when we finished we had to say our Mihi. When we said our Mihi it made Mr Kau Kau cry.He said they were tears of joy then he talked about his mum and dad and cried. We put our last touches and finished our soap carving.By Mohammad

Soap carving with Mr Kau Kau

On Wednesday the 8th of August, the year 6's had a fun day doing soap carving with Mr Kau Kau. He told us stories about people, and how we are so important. He also told us stories about when people from distant shores came to New Zealand. After, we learnt the process of soap carving. All of our work came out exceptionally well.

Mr Kau Kau comes to bishopdale

On Wednesday Mr Kau Kau came to room 9 to teach us some maori carving and some Maori backround. I walked into the classroom and saw a tall man and a strong vibe coming from his voice. I walked up to him and asked if he remembers my mum from the hospital and he picked up a wight soft blanket and hid it on his face because my mum and him go way back to when my mum was little. He walked up to the front of the classroom and he had his rakau in his right hand and put a pukana face on and started to welcome us. He told us about these 2 guys who went into the forest to hunt for some food because they were hungry. One of the men told the other man to be quiet and the other man said why,why do we have to be quiet? Because I told you to, ohhhhh said the other man they slowly walked into the forest but quietly and one of the men saw two birds and yelled look! Look over there! And all the birds took off and the man said look what you did but enough of the story and back to reality. It took him heaps of time to actually get to what were doing. He told us that we were doing soap carving for the rest of the day. He always did the steps before so we knew what we were doing. I had the most amazing day of my life. But I almost forgot he asked us to do our Mihi we all done our Mihi and he started to cry but they were joy tears. He did his Mihi and then he did a song for the people who died in the chch earthquake and I almost cried because his voice was so special and tender.

While I was in there I got 2 caught being good cards to choose the two workers in the class and I chose Anaru and Jessica for concentrating on their work the whole 15 minutes. After lunch I went into room 9 and it smelt like soap everywhere and it was even cold. I saw Mr Kaukau and said hello then 2 minutes later he made me a soap carving and I didn't even know he was going to make me one. When he finished making me one he have it to me and said I'm special then I said thank you . When lunch finished Mrs Thoms came in to take over for the art interchange and we worked on Rumplestiltskin the whole afternoon.
